My dividend income for May was slightly higher than April, and it’s the highest since I started publishing them 3 months ago. It’s nice to see the slow and steady growth start to take effect and I am hoping to continue the growth for the rest of the year.
May DIVIDEND INCOME
I received dividend income from the following sources:
- RioCan REIT
- Crescent Point Energy
- Surge Energy
- Bird Construction
- ETF: iShares Canadian Dividend Aristocrats (CDZ)
- ETF: iShares Select Dividend Index Fund (XDV)
- Cineplex Inc.
- Bank of Montreal
- Canoe EIT Income Fund
Total dividend income: $689.13
Note – some of the dividends received each month are in US currency which is converted at 1:1 for simplicity.
May was a relatively busy month for my investments. I make monthly (automatic) contributions into my investment account that get deployed regularly, but I also had some trading activity in May. Here’s what I did:
- bought more shares of Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)
- sold all shares of Fortis Inc (FTS) for a gain of 31%
Normally I prefer to buy and hold for the long term, especially in companies that tend to raise their dividends over time. But Fortis was different – I had been sitting on a decent gain and although i do still believe in Fortis long term, I own units of EIT that has a partial investment in Fortis, so I thought there wasn’t much point in owning both. With that being said, if it goes down again I will buy more 🙂
Conclusion: I don’t plan on selling any more shares in the near future but of course that could change with the market. I’ve got about 10% of the total portfolio set aside as cash in case the market takes another dip so I will be able to buy when prices are low.
