When it comes to earning Air Miles at Safeway, there are plenty of ways to get more than just the base Air Miles.
When I shopped at Safeway I would try to plan out my purchases to earn as many Air Miles as possible.
Things have sure changed since then – I have switched from Air Miles as my main rewards program in favor of cash back and we now get groceries delivered right to our front door.
For those of you who shop at Safeway, here are some strategies for earning as many Air Miles as possible.
Your method of payment is an easy opportunity to earn Air Miles.
With some juicy rewards offered by credit card companies, you can get more for your money if you have the right credit card.
The BMO Air Miles Mastercard offers 1 Air Mile for every $20 in purchases, has no annual fee and is great for anyone looking to earn Air Miles on all their purchases.
There is also the BMO Air Miles World Mastercard which offers 1 Air Mile for every $15 in purchases, but has an annual fee of $99. If you’re serious about collecting Air Miles – this is likely the best card for you.
Timing Your Purchases
Another easy way to maximize your Air Miles at Safeway is to time your spending.
Every month near the beginning of the month (usually the first Tuesday) Safeway holds a customer appreciation day where customers can earn 10x their base Air Miles (or 10% off their total).
Safeway usually offers weekly specials too such as ‘spend $75, earn 75 Air Miles’.
By timing your purchases you can easily ‘stack’ your Air Miles. If it’s possible you’ll want to spend more during the promotion period and spend less on every other day. Of course, this requires some basic strategy but can be done by making a list of what you need and how long it will last before running out again.
Most stores offer holiday incentives for shoppers and Safeway is no different.
The best seasonal Safeway Air Miles deals usually come during the Christmas shopping season. Specifically, 2-3 weeks before Christmas is a great time to stock up on Air Miles.
This past Christmas season, Safeway offered bonus Air Miles for all purchases (spend $100, get 100 Air Miles) as well as bonus Air Miles for gift cards (spend $100 in gift cards, get 100 Air Miles).
Buying gift cards at Safeway is a great idea because it allows you to get bonus Air Miles and it also lets you give the gift cards as Christmas gifts. In other words, you’d be getting Air Miles on the Christmas gifts you are giving.
Another way to earn Air Miles at Safeway is through product bonuses.
The specific offers vary each week but currently there are the following Air Miles product bonuses available:
- Buy 4 Tide detergents, earn 50 Air Miles
- Buy 2 Tylenol Extra Strength, earn 20 Air Miles
- Buy 6 Tetley Tea Bags, earn 40 Air Miles
When taking advantage of product bonuses you’ll want to make sure you are paying the lowest price possible for the item and that you actually need it. There’s no sense in buying 3 bags of ground coffee to earn 30 Air Miles if you don’t drink coffee.

Getting prescriptions filled at Safeway is an easy way to earn Air Miles, since most Safeway stores pay up to 7x your base Air Miles for the prescription.
You’ll want to double check that your Safeway still allows this since there has been some debate on the ethics of offering reward points for prescriptions.
Conclusion: it could take you years to earn Air Miles by only collecting them through your base purchases (1 Air Mile for every $20), but you can fast-track the process by taking advantage of product bonuses, seasonal offers or timing your purchases.
